I am split over this place whilst the food has alwys been excellent it is the staff and atmosphere that lets it down it just doesnt feel very friendly. Worth a visit for the food but there are many other country pubs that offer both great food and a warm friendly atmosphere aswell.

I had actually craved the food in the Lord Raglan for 4 years - I lived in California for some time and my wife and i talked about "Good Ol English Food" quite a lot... For some reason we regularly talked about this place and its home style fries (sorry chips).

If i was just reviewing the food i would happily give this place 10 out of 10 - I had a mixed grill and it was absolutely perfect. I was never asked how i wanted my steak cooked so i just left it to surprise me... The strange part is i cant really put my finger on it, it was completely cooked through but very tender and easy to cut, but not at all flaky... It somehow gave me the impression it had been smoked for hours (without the smokey taste)... Very impressed. The black pudding tasted better than any black pudding i have had before and the Cumberland sausage was beautiful.

The problem i had with the Lord Raglan was the place itself. Nangreaves is a tiny little village with amazing views but the pub / restaurant feels way too 'clicky' and uncomfortable. I suppose its the wrong place for a wild party, but it seriously lacks any real atmosphere. Maybe we just caught it at the wrong time but nobody was speaking. You order your food whilst sitting in the Pub and wait to be called into the restaurant. As the place was so quiet you could hear everybody order food & it seemed like everybody was waiting to hear the next person.

The landlord seems to have a love hate relationship with himself. He seems very proud, probably too proud of his menu, but seems to lack a love for his customers, he just isn't very friendly and he kind of grunts at you. Maybe 20+ years and he is a little fed up now, but as I put 100% effort in to my own customer service i feel like everyone should be the same with their own business.

I would definitely suggest you go and sample the food (especially the mixed grill), but don't hold your breath if you want a good country pub night out... There are much nicer places to have a relaxed drink.

I think 3 stars for the Lord Raglan is very fair... The food was very good, but the experience was poor.
